New Poem for Jeff D

Summer Days

Summer afternoon in
A dark living room
You on the couch eyes
Half closed after mowing
The lawn, but still open
Enough that we knew
Not to turn the channel from
The dusty old WGN “shit kicker”
That had held his imagination since
He was young

He said the slow drawl and the
High plains clouds driving towards
The horizon forever was all a man
Needed to fall asleep on a sunny
summer afternoon, shades drawn,
Air conditioning trying to keep up.

“But we just want”, we would start
Be kids, go play outside, he would finish

And I would hold still his
Two cheeks with my tiny hands,
Lean in close to his fatherly smelling
Face and like the flutter of a
Butterfly, kiss each of his paper thin
Raspberry veined eyelids, European style,
While pondering the cute red headed girl
Down the block, and if she had any
New freckles to share.
